What is Asbestos Cancer Mesothelioma?

August 28th, 2010

Asbestos is a prominent mineral that is vastly used in many modern manufacturing undertakings. It is agreed that the mineral is used for construction and various other projects. The mineral is also known to be a health hazard. It causes asbestos cancer or cancer of the mesothelioma. This is a delicate situation and many industries are not recognizing the harmful effects of asbestos. When employees develop the asbestos cancer, they file for lawsuits. These lawsuits run into millions and in order to avoid unlikely situations, the companies must invest on appropriate protective gear for their employees working with asbestos.

Every inch of the human body is composed of cells. These cells are known to replicate at regular intervals. This cell replication procedure happens for the major share of one’s life. As long as the cell replication process is under control, the body and the included organs will function normally. When the cell replication becomes unusual, then it leads to the condition termed as cancer. Since the mesothelioma is also composed of cells, irregular growth of the cells in the region causes asbestos cancer mesothelioma. The factor that triggers this abnormal growth of the mesothelioma cells is still mysterious.

There are certain differences between the other normal forms of cancer and the mesothelioma cancer. Since the mesothelioma can be found covering almost all the major organs such as the lungs and the heart, the cancer can originate anywhere on the body. Secondly, it is hard to diagnose this type of cancer. Employees complain of body aches and pains, but the family members ignore it as work related fatigue and tiredness. It is during the final stages that the patient realizes that he has got cancer of the mesothelioma. You might already know this fact – there is a threshold period within which the patient must be subjected to treatment procedures.

Once the period is long gone, the patient’s cancer might not respond to the treatment. It is said that fine powder of asbestos, when inhaled, will lead to cancer of the mesothelioma. The importance of the mesothelioma layer must never be underestimated. This protective layer is known to lubricate the organs at regular intervals and protect it from shocks and sudden impacts. Treatment for this form of cancer is widely available, but only small ratios of the people who are subjected to the treatment are known to successfully respond to the treatment.

Insist on effective protective measures when one is working with asbestos. The cancer of the mesothelioma might affect one, and he might be unaware of it. Educating the employees about the disease and providing them with ample information is the first step that must be taken by the companies in order to eliminate the condition. It is disheartening to find that even though many employers are aware of the situation, the cancer of the mesothelioma is progressing at a fast pace in our country. Many human lives are at stake because of this condition and employers seem to ignore the situation.

Mesothelioma Cancer – Asbestos-Induced Cancer

August 27th, 2010

Mesothelioma cancer is a type of lung cancer caused by too much exposure to asbestos. It is most commonly found in the mesothelium or the outer lining of the lungs. Most people diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer contract this disease through breathing asbestos dust and fibers or having been too much exposed to asbestos dust because of their job. In cases when a person without any previous occupational exposure develops this cancer, it is assumed that the exposure may have come from asbestos fibers and dusts found on the clothes of a person in their home who worked in a workplace where the asbestos dusts and fibers were found.

There are different reasons that make diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer in its early stages really difficult. The first reason is the symptoms. Mesothelioma cancer symptoms can have a latency period from 20 to 50 years after the first exposure to asbestos, which only means that by the time the symptoms start showing up, the cancer is already in its advanced stage. Even when the symptoms are already present, the diagnosis remains to be a slow process. This is because there are different diseases that mirror the signs and symptoms found in patients diagnosed with mesothelioma, and because of this, this disease is often the last stop – often when the patient does not mention about the possibility of asbestos exposure.

The success of mesothelioma cancer treatment depends mainly on the stage in which the cancer was diagnosed. Because the disease is not diagnosed until it is in its advanced stages, the treatment is often unsuccessful. Studies show that when the disease is found within either stage I or stage II, mesothelioma cancer treatment, usually combined with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, is successful in extending the life of the patient for 5 years at a rate of 74% to 75%. There are also other forms of therapy that may be used side by side with the conventional treatment. These treatment forms have been shown on some occasions to decrease the size of mesothelioma cancer cells found in a patient.

For many years, asbestos was used in a wide array of industrial and household products because of its many types and uses. It is fireproof and can even be used as insulator; thereby, making it very popular for daily use during the Industrial Revolution. It was unknown whether the people at that time knew about the dangers of asbestos dusts and fibers; however, during the 1900s, the risk and dangers of using asbestos was becoming more and more obvious.

People residing in mining towns developed lung problems, and research and studies showed that 95% of asbestos workers passed away at a very young age. In an undisturbed state, asbestos seems to be safe. However, once friable or damaged, the fibers and dusts become ingested; thereby leading to health problems. Although some companies were already aware of this threat, they still continued working with products with asbestos without giving regard to their employees. This is the reason why mesothelioma cancer became common among those who worked on plants and factories using asbestos.

Asbestos – As a Factor Causing Mesothelioma

August 26th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a complicated syndrome which is caused due to exposure to unsafe asbestos. This cancer spreads in the membrane surrounding the area of lungs, heart and stomach. It takes several years to detect the cause of this disease. Asbestos can be inhaled anywhere, in the place of work or in schools with asbestos walls. Even at home if the clothes are washed with asbestos there are chances of getting this awful disease.

Asbestos occur naturally in the environment in the form of group of minerals. Earlier its use was tremendous because of its strength, effectiveness and its resistance to heat. In 80% cases affected due to this cancer, the main offender is asbestos. When asbestos is burnt, hazardous fibres are released in the air. The linings of lungs build up cancerous cells due to the penetration of these fibres.

There are three types of this malady. The one which causes pain in the chest, chronic cough, croakiness is Pleural-mesothelioma, which many a times is diagnosed as pneumonia. The lungs are affected in this type of cancer. Pericardial-mesothelioma interfere the function of heart membrane followed by symptoms like rise and fall in heart beat, chest pain, and low energy level. The third type which hurtles the stomach cavity is Peritonial-mesthelioma. The symptoms can be pain and uninhibited growth of cancer cells.

Imaging equipment like x-rays and scans are helpful for the diagnosis of this ailment. Though a meticulous series of physical tests is carried out, to get more correctness, Biopsy is suggested. This includes a microscopic examination of a body tissue. Amongst the most recent tests, Mesomark is considered to be the faultless detection test. When the spread of the disease in the body is known, further treatment can be done fast.

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the common treatments for this disease. More often two or more cures can be combined to get better results. Surgery is not done in many of the patients due to late diagnosis. With the inventions in medical science, efforts are being made to make the patients live longer with treatments like angiogenesis, immunotherapy and gene therapy.

The treatment for Mesothlioma is high-priced. The patients or family members of victims, often find it unmanageable to go for doctors. Consultation from an Attorney can always help them to get reparation from corporations. Thus the fees for hospital, surgical treatments, chemotherapy and expenses for burial can be arranged with this.

Oxford American Handbook of Pulmonary Medicine (Oxford American Handbooks of Medicine (Quality Paperback))

I am an ER intern, and was looking for a reference-able book for on the job…
I compared this and Baby Tint’s, this was far better, why you ask? well here’s why…

1. Organized to look up fast, with table of contents on back cover, dark tabs on side pages for each section, and 2 strings to keep bookmarks on the go that wont fall out. Also more durable cover to repel ER fluids flinging around. and coffee.
2. Problems are well organized so you know where to look for what tests to order, when to consult, and how to treat.. properly.. specifically with drug dosages so you dont need another drug pda. Alphabetical and by system. Also has dispo instructions.. follow up in how many days? 3-5 or 5-7?
3. Quick reference section for what to do in common emergencies, ACS, COPD, Asthma, etc… just a list of what to do and order ASAP… very useful.. especially for interns/dummies.
4. Good overview, when you just want to look up things quickly, what was that? and what do i do? its like a Wikipedia for EM.
5. Also section of common drugs, procedures, peds stuff. It’s like a senior resident’s essential notes compiled, probably similar to pocket medicine, but for EM… ie its more readable (not an outline from med school)

My co interns have been looking for a starter reference book, and this is what we seem to be agreeing on. Tintinelli’s or Rosen’s or whatever fatty for home to look up and read “deeper”, and this book for at work right before you order the 5 essential things you need or set up for a procedure, “light reading” to look up stuff fast, or during lecture when something is mentioned and everyone else seems to know exactly what to do and you feel like you should be nodding your head too… but you aren’t. Very EM oriented. Quick, precise, and actually usable.
